Ang Lee's children encouraged him to take drugs.

The 'Sense and Sensibility' director - who says he has tried cannabis - said his two sons told him he "must try" hallucinogenic mushrooms while researching his sixties music film 'Taking Woodstock'.

Lee said: "I was tempted to do it, but I couldn't take it. One smoke of pot and I fall asleep. I don't get much out of it. But that's beside the point. My kids were saying, 'Daddy, you have to try!'"

Lee - who also directed 'Hulk' and indie hit 'The Ice Storm' - said that he was "almost embarrassed" to admit he had never tried LSD, but told his sons - aged 25 and 19 - that he refused to go "method" for the film, which features a scene with characters high on the drug.

He said: "I said, 'Listen, I didn't go through a sex change operation to direct all these women's movies so don't get me started.'"

He added: "At the end of the day it doesn't matter if you've taken it or not, you have to visualise it."
