The gangster film genre is back and seemingly very strong. As we
reported last week, Johnny Depp and Michael
Mann's PUBLIC ENEMIES did a surprising $47 million in its first few
days of release, which was huge and done on a nationwide spectacular weather weekend in
the US, which was also the 4th July weekend.
'Enemies' is now sitting at $66 M US and $71M worldwide - and growing
Now, PUBLIC ENEMIES has seemingly boosted two other high profile productions.
'Enemies' strong showing has provided a shot in the arm for two
other gangster projects in development: The Brian De Palma Untouchables
prequel, CAPONE RISING, and PRETTY BABY MACHINE.
Last Monday's
better than expected Box Office results for 'Enemies' has elicited a
bidding war for PRETTY BABY MACHINE between studios.
We're excited
about both CAPONE RISING and PBM. Capone rising features De Palma at the
helm! Need we say more? 300 and the upcoming GAMER Gerard Butler is also rumored as attached to the project.
PRETTY BABY MACHINE originated as a razor sharp graphic novel
published by Image Comics. It was then announced by Variety, The Hollywood
Reporter and us here at THN that PRETT BABY MACHINE had been
picked up pre-emptively by Bob Cooper's Landscape Entertainment (Jerry
McGuire, Mr. Woodcock, John Tucker Must Die) before the San Diego Comic Con last year. But we're not clear if the provocative project, rumored to brag attachments Jason Statham,Mickey
Rourke, Ian McShane and Gary Oldman that is a blend of gangster lore
and fiction, focusing heavily on Pretty Boy Floyd, Baby Face Nelson and Machine Gun Kelly (hence the title), Al Capone, and showcasing a less populist side of John Dillinger, if the project still sits with Landscape.
We had interviewed PBM Creator and Development Producer, Clark
Westerman, last year at the time of the announced deal and he stated it
was quite likley the project would not be
shopped until results of
'Enemies' was in. 'Capone Rising' looks like it took a wait and see as
well to see what the public's appetite for the period ganster genere is
20+ years after the smash success of De Palma's Untouchables.
PBM explores a pocket in time during the long, hot summer of 1933
provides the backdrop for a story that easily could have been.
Prohibition is in full swing and Capone is king. Joseph Kennedy is
building his empire, and John Dillinger is in jail. Three of the worlds
most infamous gangsters, Pretty Boy Floyd, Baby Face Nelson and Machine
Gun Kelly, each have a weak spot, someone -apparently Capone - has
found each gangster's Achilles. The trio, make an uneasy pact to put
their common foe in the dirt. But the difference between what PBM are
led to believe and the truth is wide.
Here are a couple of promo pics from the graphic novel.
