The Blu-Ray Review: Defiance

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

defiance.jpg

Colin Jacobson looks at the Daniel Craig starrer in high-def.

Although Valkyrie and Defiance - both of which hit movie screens within weeks of each other in late 2008/early 2009 - deal with resistance to the Nazis, they take on very different forms of opposition. Valkyrie examined a military plot to kill Hitler, while Defiance details more "grass roots" efforts against oppression.

Defiance takes us to Byelorussia in 1941 as the Nazis run roughshod over the locals. A few folks hide in the forest to stay alive. However, Tuvia Bielski (Daniel Craig) and his brother Zus (Liev Schreiber) eventually start an armed resistance to the occupation. This leads to multiple violent confrontations as the villagers attempt to fight back against their oppressors.

The Movie Bits!

movie.pngAccording to The Hollywood Reporter, Dancing With The Stars performer Julianne Hough is said to be screen-testing for the female lead in FOOTLOOSE opposite Chase Crawford. Entertainment Weekly adds that the new film, which recently got a rewrite from Erin Brockovich's Susannah Grant, will pay homage to the first film -- the setting will still be a dance-free town, and the original cast could pop up in cameos.

Lucy Punch has replaced Nicole Kidman in Woody Allen's next film. She joins Anthony Hopkins, Freida Pinto, Naomi Watts and Josh Brolin in the cast of the untitled flick, which kicks off shooting in London in July.

The ALIEN remake/ prequel has been officially confirmed by producer Tony Scott in an interview with Collider.

Eighties actor Chevy Chase has joined the cast of HOT TUB TIME MACHINE. Chevy plays a mysterious repairman who dispenses pearls of wisdom and may or may not be behind the metaphysical road trip, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film follows a bunch of unsatisfied guys who get thrown back to their younger days in 1987 via their Jacuzzi. Sounds great. The film is based over at United Artists.

Natalie Portman has joined the cast of YOUR HIGHNESS. James Franco and Danny McBride star in the flick that McBride also co-wrote. The Universal comedy sees McBride play an arrogant lazy prince who with his brother (Franco) must complete a quest to save the kingdom and his brother's fiance. Portman will play a warrior princess that the lazy prince falls in love with.

20th Century Fox are remaking GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN with Lakeshore Entertainment. Helen Hunt and Sarah Jessica Parker starred in the 1985 original. The studio has hired Michelle Morgan to write a new version of the film, which centered on two girls who share a passion for dancing and the hit show "Dance TV."

ROBOCOP helmer Paul Verhoeven will direct THE SURROGATE for 20th Century Fox. The film is actually based on the 2004 book by Kathryn Mackel. The story centers on a couple desperate to have a child who find themselves in an unbearable position when they find out the surrogate they hired to carry their baby is insane.

Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson's motion-capture film THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN: THE SECRET OF THE UNICORN has finally got a release date. The film will debut on December 23rd, 2011. So, not long to wait then.

Warner Brothers have picked up a new spec script called TRANS AM. Matt Johnson wrote the film, which centers on a disgraced sheriff's deputy and a repentant getaway driver who must elude a federal manhunt when they join forces to bring an escaped bank robber to justice.

The house featured in FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF is now up for sale, apparently.

Megan Fox feels like a hooker

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
gq-fox.jpgYes, Megan Fox feels like a hooker, but not in real life. Nope, the TRANSFORMERS star reveals that as an 'actress' she feels like a hooker. NOTW reports:

"When you think about it, we actors are kind of prostitutes," says the Transformers star. "We get paid to feign attraction and love. Other people are paying to watch us kissing someone, touching someone, doing things people in a normal monogamous relationship would never do with anyone who's not their partner. It's really kind of gross."

Megan next appears in TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN, which arrives in cinemas next month. The starlet also features on the cover of the new British G! (see above).

The Blu-Ray Review: Valkyrie

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

valkyrie-bluray.jpg

Colin Jacobson reviews the Tom Cruise WWII flick...

Tom Cruise as a Nazi? I suppose a more ludicrous casting choice can be imagined, but it's tough. Nonetheless, that's what 2008's Valkyrie brought us: a sieg-heiling Cruise - with an eyepatch, to boot!

I try to keep an open mind, though, and the story of Valkyrie offers enough intrigue to entice me. Based on true events, the film takes us to Germany smack dab in the middle of World War II. We meet Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg (Cruise), a German officer who grows increasingly convinced that Hitler's cause is detrimental to the good of the world.

More trailers peoples!!! This time we have a look at the Dennis Quaid starrer PANDORUM. The IMDB has the synopsis. YouTube has the new trailer.

In Pandorum, actors, Dennis Quaid (Vantage Point, The Express) and Ben Foster (3:10 to Yuma, Alpha Dog), join Cam Gigandet (Never Back Down, Twilight), Cung Le (Tekken, Fighting), newcomer Antje Traue and director Christian Alvart (Antibodies) to tell the terrifying story of two crew members stranded on a spacecraft who quickly realize they are not alone. Two astronauts awaken in a hyper-sleep chamber aboard a seemingly abandoned spacecraft. It's pitch black, they are disoriented, and the only sound is a low rumble and creak from the belly of the spacecraft. They can't remember anything - who are they, what is their mission? The only way out of the chamber is a dark and narrow airshaft. Corporal Bower (Foster), the younger of the two, crawls inside, while the other, Lt. Payton (Quaid), stays behind for guidance on a radio transmitter. As Bower ventures deeper and deeper into the ship, he begins to uncover a terrifying reality. What's Your Favourite Scary Movie?

DA_Charlize_Theron_026.jpgTo celebrate the release of the scariest horror film of the last ten years (I'm talking DRAG ME TO HELL folks), we're asking you the question... What's Your Favourtie Scary Movie of all time over at My Hollywood News. Mine? Well, I'm going with the Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves starrer DEVIL'S ADVOCATE. There is so scary, shocking acting in that movie. Post your comments over at our social networking site here.
Okay so Nicolas Cage is starring in a remake of Abel Ferarra's classic 1992 film THE BAD LIEUTENANT, and we're all psyched to see what Werner Herzog has done with the remake, but the big question is whether or not we get to see Cage pulling a Keitel and walking around naked with his arms outstretched or jerking off on the side of a taxi cab (like the method Keitel did back in the day). Really? Or not... Anyway, this remake/ sequel/ reboot - whatever, has a fairly wanky title: BAD LIEUTENANT: PORT OF CALL NEW ORLEANS.

Anyway, here's a new trailer for the film from Joblo.

Oh no! They're remaking Alien!

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
alien1.jpgOkay folks, here's some disturbing news. The Bitch Is Back! It seems that following on from news that PREDATOR is going to be made, now it seems that Ridley Scott and his red-capped brother Tony are producing an ALIEN remake. Oh yes. Bloody Disgusting broke the news once again!

So Mr. Anonymous is back again. And being that 20th Century Fox is remaking Predator, it doesn't surprise me at all that Fox is also going back to their catalog for a reboot of Ridley Scott's Alien.

What our tipster informed us is that - opposite the Predator situation - the plan is to stick with the original concept of only one alien on the ship.

Michael Costigan, Ridley Scott and even Tony Scott are all on board to produce and have tapped Carl Rinsch to get beyond the camera and bring a new Ripley to the big screen.

Who the hell is Carl Rinsch? Find out here.
seann.jpgSean William Scott and Adam Brody have joined the cast of Kevin Smith's next film A COUPLE OF DICKS.

The Hollywood Reporter reports the news.

The script, by Robb and Mark Cullen, follows a maverick cop (Bruce Willis) and his partner (Tracy Morgan) who, while tracking a valuable stolen baseball card, tangle with a memorabilia-obsessed gangster and rescue a Mexican beauty who holds the key to millions in laundered drug money.

Scott plays a thief known as the Sh*t Bandit for the souvenirs he leaves at his robberies. Brody is an abrasive detective not happy to be working with Willis and Morgan.

Shooting kicks off soon on the comedy (actually next Monday) in New York.

I am loving the DRAG ME TO HELL clips that are being fed to us from Sony at the moment. The Sam Raimi horror fest is released in cinemas from today, and I am literally out the door to get my ticket right about now. I particularly like the second of these two clips. WARNING - that one is definitely not for the faint of heart, Brilliant.

tyson.jpgOur thoughts and prayers go out to former boxer Mike Tyson who is mourning the tragic loss of his daughter Exodus.

4-year-old Exodus died after an accident on an exercise treadmill at home in Phoenix, Arizona.

Exodus Tyson had been on life support after she was found yesterday by her 7-year-old brother with her neck on a cable.

A spokesperson for family issued the following statement.

"We are grateful for the tremendous outpouring of love and prayers from all over the world. There are no words to describe the tragic loss of our beloved Exodus. We ask you now to please respect our need at this very difficult time for privacy to grieve and try to help each other heal."
I was really impressed by this. What follows is a fan made trailer for GREEN LANTERN with Nathan Fillion (he from SERENITY and the like) in the lead role. The fan trailer has amassed a huge 300,000+ views on You Tube since it was uploaded just a few days ago. It simply rocks!

This is my vision for a Green Lantern movie with Nathan Fillion as Hal Jordan. He won't be Hal for real, but all the more reason for a fan trailer!

The trailer for the latest Jared Leto film MR NOBODY has just hit My Hollywood News. Now, I must admit, I know absolutely nothing about this movie, so I looked up some deets.

Here's what the IMDB have to say.

Nemo Nobody leads an ordinary existence at his wife's side, Elise, and their 3 children until the day when reality skids and he wakes up as an old man in the year 2092. At 120, Mr. Nobody is both the oldest man in the world and the last mortal of a new mankind where nobody dies anymore. But that doesn't seem to interest or bother him very much. The only questions that preoccupy him in the present is whether he lived the right life for himself, loved the woman whom he was supposed to love, and had the children whom he was meant to have... now his purpose is to find the right answer.

Hit play below to check out the new trailer.

mwtgg.jpgColin Jacobson reviews Roger Moore's Golden Gun Bond film...

To indicate that 1974's The Man With the Golden Gun possesses anything other than a terrible reputation among Bond fans would be incorrect. Here are some quotes from Bond authorities: Lee Pfeiffer and Dave Worrall's The Essential Bond calls it "the weakest of the Bond films to date" (through 1997's Tomorrow Never Dies). They also indicate that "Gun represents the series at an artistic nadir" and go from there. In The Complete James Bond Encyclopedia, Steven Jay Rubin states simply that "This film is a turkey".
streetmap.pngHere's a cool little article posted over at Total Film. bookofelifirstlook.jpgUSA Today have provided us peeps with a first look at the Denzel Washington film THE BOOK OF ELI. The flick is helmed by FROM HELL directors Allen and Albert Hughes.

Sometimes, a place can be too apocalyptic.

Like this place. Temperatures can drop below freezing as snowstorms pummel the desert terrain and winds whip sand into fierce dust storms.

"You occasionally ask yourself why you're shooting a movie in these conditions," says Allen Hughes, who co-directs the thriller The Book of Eli, due Jan. 15, with his twin brother, Albert. "When the wind is really blowing, it looks like the earth is meeting the sky. It looks like the end of the world."

Opening January 15, 2010, the sci-fi drama revolves around a lone warrior (Washington) who must fight to bring society the knowledge that could be the key to its redemption. Oldman has been set to portray the despot of a small makeshift town who's determined to take possession of the book Eli's guarding.

alan-partridge460_795711c.jpgSteve Coogan has revealed that he is to bring one of his most famous characters to the big-screen. Comedian Coogan, who is currently appearing in NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM 2, told Radio 1 in the UK that a film is 'in the works'.

This from Digital Spy.

"We are planning on making a movie," he said. "We're talking at the moment. What it is we're not quite sure."

Coogan divulged that a storyline has been decided on, but declined to give specifics. The 43-year-old also acknowledged that the leap from TV to film may dictate a change in approach to the character.

"That's just something you need to be aware of," he commented. "You need to be aware of that and it might mean you readdress the character, make him slightly subtler or build up to it in a different way. But that's certainly something that's going to be on our minds but I think Alan is complex enough to sustain something longer."

050926_ashton_moore_hmed3p.hmedium.jpgAh, the power of the Internet. Or, the power of Twitter to be precise. It seems that Britain's Got Talent judge Amanda Holden has invited Hollywood royalty to the show's final on Saturday via the social networking tool.

Will Demi Moore show up:

From the Daily Mail:

She [Amanda] wrote on Tuesday night: 'B.G.T final is on the 30th, I'll speak to Simon - am sure he will let you borrow his plane x.'

She then added: 'Message for Demi! Please someone get this to her as I am still rubbish at twittering Simon says yes! But to first class tickets!'

To which Demi replied: 'What no private plane? Generous offer! Thank you! And thank Simon! When are the finals?'

And a thrilled Amanda added: 'Fabulous, the final is this Saturday, we'll put you up in Dorchester and roll out the red carpet!'

The Movie Bits

cinema_film_reel_322.jpgHere's today's movie bits, all of your film news in one place!!!

Plans are a foot to reboot the TOMB RAIDER franchise. According to Dan Lin, producer of TERMINATOR SALVATION, he's going to take on the famous Eidos computer game series next. "We're rebooting Lara Croft, really excited," he said at T4's premiere in the US. "It's a great origin story that we're going to tell. A very character-oriented, more realistic than past Lara Croft movies." The new film will focus less on the action. "I would say it's like Terminator - character-driven action," he said. "I think for me the Lara Croft games and movies have gone a little too action-oriented. I wanted to have action, but with character."

Australian helmer Roger Donaldson has signed on the dotted line to direct UMBRA, a new film for Relativity Media. Steven Karczynski wrote the screenplay for the film. The plot details on the project are being kept under wraps, but it is described as a paranoid thriller.

Reports in today's trades say that Relativity Media re planning to remake the 1992 movie BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. Fran Rubel Kuzui and her husband, Kaz Kuzui are tackling the project, which at the moment has zero input from series and movie creator Joss Whedon.

Walt Disney Pictures are remaking their 1986 classic FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR. original told the story of a 12-year-old boy who is abducted by an alien spacecraft in 1978 and reappears eight years later, still the same age and with no memory of what happened. NASA scientists discover a connection between the boy and a downed spacecraft and try to exploit the boy, who ultimately escapes with the ship and attempts to reunite with his family. Brad Copeland is writing the new movie.

Not really movie news, but social networking and micro blogging site Twitter is to be become a new, unscripted television series. Novelist/screenwriter Amy Ephron came up with the concept, described as "putting ordinary people on the trail of celebrities in a revolutionary competitive format." Whatever that means.

TRAINSPOTTING author Irvine Welsh is to direct soccer comedy THE MAGNIFICENT ELEVEN. This modernization of classic western "The Magnificent Seven" centers on a local amateur soccer team, a Tandoori restaurant and a group of menacing thugs.

More tomorrow folks!

star-trek.jpgHere, Adam Mast looks at the new STAR TREK movie... and offers up his opinion.

Does J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot go where no other Star Trek film has gone before? Well, the film's time travel hook has already been used in several entries of the franchise, but that doesn't matter, because what this re-invention does do is inject a joyful spirit back into the proceedings. Simply put, Star Trek is a hell of a lot of fun.

rev-road.jpegColin Jacobson casts an eye over the Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet film REVOLUTIONARY ROAD.

Exactly 11 years after their triumph in Titanic, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet reunite in 2008's Revolutionary Road. Set in the 1950s, we meet young married couple Frank (DiCaprio) and April Wheeler (Winslet). A quick intro shows the start of their courtship, but then we leap ahead to find them married and living in suburban Connecticut.
bella-edward.jpgEntertainment Weekly have bagged a bunch of new images from the in-production TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON. Hit the link for more.

''Of course it's different,'' says Kristen Stewart. Okay, maybe it was silly to ask if things had changed since she filmed Twilight a year ago. New Moon, the second movie adapted from Stephenie Meyer's novels, is shooting in Vancouver, Canada, instead of Oregon; fans are now showing up in droves; and director Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass) has taken the reins. In the movie, Bella (Stewart) has been abandoned by her vampire love, Edward (Robert Pattinson), but she hears his voice in her thoughts, even as she finds herself drawn to her friend Jacob (Taylor Lautner). ''When you get broken up with, it really is the worst thing in the world,'' says Weitz. ''Meyer gives a kind of supernatural context to people's real feelings, which sums up what we all go through.''

Kylie wants to act more

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
kylieminogue.jpgKylie Minogue, the singer who cut her teeth in the entertainment industry by acting in the hit Aussie soap Neighbours, is said to be taking acting lessons in a hope to gain more film roles.

"I would quite like to do some comedy or rom-com roles," she told The Mirror.

"I'm taking some acting courses to brush up on my skills. They are going well, but the thought of going in front of an audition panel again scares the life out of me."

Minogue starred in the box-office bomb THE DELINQUENTS and also had a small role in MOULIN ROUGE.

The folks over at Joblo.com's Arrow In The Head have got their bloody mitts on the trailer for THE DESCENT 2, the sequel to the Neil Marshall modern horror classic.

THE DESCENT 2 picks up immediately after the events depicted in THE DESCENT Sarah (MacDonald), emerges alone from a cave system following an expedition with her five friends in the Appalachian mountains. Distraught, injured and covered in the blood of her missing companions, Sarah is incoherent and half-wild with fear. Skeptical about her account of events and convinced Sarah's psychosis hides far darker secrets, Sheriff Vaines forces her back into the caves to help locate the rest of the group. Trapped by falling rocks, the rescue party are driven deep into the caverns, and as one by one the fate of the missing girls is revealed, Sarah is forced to confront her deepest fears.

Halloween 2: H2 clip!

I actually quite liked Rob Zombie's attempt at rebooting the HALLOWEEN franchise and I'm kinda psyched to see what he does with the sequel, H2. The film has now got an exclusive clip playing over at MTV, which you can see by clicking the play button below.

Toy Story 3 trailer description

toystory3.gifThe boys over at the recently revamped SlashFilm have bagged a description for the upcoming TOY STORY 3 trailer which is set to debut before the Disney/ Pixar release UP this coming weekend.

"It is confirmed." ... "Toy Story 3 teaser trailer is attached. Unfortunately like i said it is a teaser. It only shows the original characters building a Toy Story 3 sign led by Woody pretty funny. Then Buzz Lightyear showing him off by building a better one. They also show the release date of June 2010."

ranga.pngEvery month, we co-sponsor a student film contest over at the ReelShow, showcasing the very best in rising film talent. This past month RS Prasanna won the competition with his film RANGA PLAYS A BOY. I caught up with him yesterday to find out a little more about the film, his influences, and what is in store for him next...

Ranga is a 12 year old boy growing up in a south Indian village in the heart of India, circa 1970. His world is turned upside down when he is forced to become the last-minute replacement for a part in Varadhu's village play. The only problem: the role he has to play is that of a girl!
night_at_the_museum_movie_image.jpgWell, who could have seen this coming. It seems that Ben Stiller has beaten Christian Bale and McG's TERMINATOR SALVATION to the top of the US box-office this weekend. The comedy, set in a museum that comes to life, took nearly $10 million more than T4. NATM2's total tally for the weekend was actually a little less than T4's in all, by T4 opened on Wednesday, so it doesn't really count.

STAR TREK Kling'd-on to the third spot with another $21.9 in it's satchel, while ANGELS AND DEMONS hit numero four with $21.4 million extra in the bank. New release DANCE FLICK rounded out the top five.

Here's that top ten in full peeps.

1. Night at the Museum 2 $ 53.5 Million
2. Terminator Salvation $ 43 Million $ 56.4 Million
3. Star Trek $ 21.9 Million $ 183.6 Million
4. Angels and Demons $ 21.4 Million $ 81.5 Million
5. Dance Flick $ 11.1 Million
6. Wolverine $ 7.8 Million $ 163.1 Million
7. Ghosts of Girlfriends Past $ 3.7 Million $ 45.9 Million
8. Obsessed $ 2 Million $ 65.9 Million
9. Monsters vs Aliens $ 1.3 Million $ 192.9 Million
10. 17 Again $ 1 Million $ 60.3 Million

And the Palme D'or goes to...

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
michael-haneke.jpgHot off the press is the announcement as to who has won the prestigious Palme D'or at this year's Cannes Film Festival. It wasn't Loach or Tarantino! Nope, it was Michael Haneke's THE WHITE RIBBON, a film which studies the chilling, malicious atmosphere gripping a German village on the eve of World War I.

Director Michael Haneke's work saw off competition from past winners including Britain's Ken Loach and Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds.

One of its stars, Austrian Christoph Waltz, won best actor for his portrayal of an SS officer.

Charlotte Gainsbourg was named best actress for her role in Lars Von Trier's controversial film Antichrist.

The Danish film-maker's work did not go down well due to its brutal and frank scenes of domestic violence.

Hulu coming to the UK?

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
hulu460.jpgHere's some exciting news for UK movie fans. Our mates over in the US have had access to the superb Hulu service for quite a while, and now it looks like the Brits are going to get it. So, that means tons of movies and TV episodes for FREE.

This from IT Pro Portal.

Free video on demand service Hulu could come to the UK as early as September with thousands of hours of content from America and from UK partners like ITV and Channel 4.

Emma Barnett, Technology Correspondent from The Telegraph, says that senior staff close to the deal are trying to get commercial broadcasters ITV and Channel 4, which were left high and dry after the early demise of Project Kangaroo.

Leighton Meester looks good UpFront

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
leighton-meester.jpgForgive me. I didn't know who Leighton Meester was, so I Googled her. Found this:

Meester's parents, Connie and Doug, were involved in a drug ring that smuggled marijuana from Jamaica to the United States. Both were arrested for their involvement in the ring, and Connie was released on bail. While out, Connie became pregnant, and once she was convicted, she spent her pregnancy in a Texas state prison. Leighton was delivered in a Texas hospital, her mother was sentenced to ten years in prison.

From the Wikipedia no less. Anyway, Leighton has also appeared in 24, LAW AND ORDER and my favourite show ENTOURAGE. Movie credits include the upcoming THE ROOMMATE and DATE NIGHT.

She also scrubs up well. Here she is attended some CW UpFront event in the US.

More Inglourious Basterds

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
inglourious-basterds-3.jpgIt seems that there may be more to come from the INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS. Apparently Universal want more from the Quentin Tarantino movie, including an addition scene.

This from Thompson on Hollywood.

Brad and Angelina seemed happy, as did an ebullient Quentin Tarantino, although TWC's 50/50 partner on the picture, Universal is talking to the filmmaker about returning to the editing room post-Cannes to make some trims edits that might include adding a scene, says Tarantino, who reminds that the film, at two hours 27 minutes, is well under his contractual final cut length of two hours 48 minutes.
More at the end of the link above.
taken-bd.jpgColin Jacobson is taken... with erm, TAKEN.

Liam Neeson, action star? Apparently, as he starred in 2009's Taken, a surprise hit that came out of nowhere and earned a tidy $144 million - less than $1 million behind Paul Blart: Mall Cop as the second most successful January release ever. How "out of nowhere" was Taken? The movie played Europe nearly a year before it got its "garbage time" US release. Clearly no one at Fox expected much from it, so that makes its success more gratifying.
Take a look at these two thrilling images from M. Night Shyamalan's next film THE LAST AIRBENDER, which stars Noah Ringer and SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE actor Dev Patel.

Paramount Pictures will release the big screen adventure on July 2, 2010, which is.. damn.. over a year away from now... These come courtesy of USA Today.

The trailer for the new Bruce Willis film is now up on MySpace. THE SURROGATES....

n the film, FBI agents (Willis and Mitchell) investigate the mysterious murder of a college student linked to the man who helped create a high-tech surrogate phenomenon that allows people to purchase unflawed robotic versions of themselves--fit, good looking remotely controlled machines that ultimately assume their life roles--enabling people to experience life vicariously from the comfort and safety of their own homes. The murder spawns a quest for answers: in a world of masks, who's real and who can you trust?

zach-braff.jpgFormer SCRUBS star Zach Braff is going to perform a rewrite and will direct and star in SWINGLES. The film is based on a Duncan Birmingham spec script, and centers on a bachelor who is dumped by his wingman and teams up with a sharp-tongued woman he can't stand in order to meet singles. Jeff Roda wrote a draft as well.

Cameron Diaz is already up to star in the film.
415-1.jpgOne of my favourite Dean Koontz books is being adapted for the big-screen. THE HUSBAND will be re-written and directed by Ole Bornedal.

The book is about an ordinary working man whose love for his wife is put to a harrowing series of tests over a 60-hour period.

Review: 12 Rounds

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
john-cena-_12-rounds_-march-27.jpgAdam Mast goes 12 ROUNDS with Renny Harlin and John Cena.

Kyle and I had a good laugh the other day while talking about the marketing campaign for the new actioneer, "12 Rounds". Our fearless music guru thought it was a riot that in the trailer for this recent release, the marketing team goes out of their way to say; "From the director of Die Hard 2!". What makes this statement so funny? Well, "Die Hard 2" came out way back in 1990. Director Renny Harlin has gone on to make other films since then, but aside from "Cliffhanger", you'd be hard pressed to name one that's worth a damn (for the record, I'm not a fan of the cult fave "Long Kiss Goodnight"). How's Harlin's latest effort? Well, it's safe to say that when Renny sets out to make his next film, the marketing team won't use; "From the director of "12 Rounds!" in their marketing campaign.
coop.jpgTHE HANGOVER star Bradley Cooper tells CHUD online that his comments were taken out of context - "A guy came up to me and asked about the character Faceman in The A-Team. The man was reported to be playing Face in the new movie. Not true.

"I said 'Oh, that's out there already?', but my point was that news about the film is out there. Literally that people knew about Carnahan and the remake, that's it. I haven't read a script or met Joe Carnahan."

So there.
tarantino-sipa.jpgQuentin Tarantino's INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS is literally premiering over at the Cannes Film Festival as I write this. We're amped! The reviews have been mostly positive for the film, which actually gets a release in August.

Tarantino spoke to the BBC today: "All the world's film press from the planet Earth - they're all here," he said with typical ebullience.

"There's something about them all being here and seeing you drop the movie, bam - everybody weighs in at the exact same time.

"It's like the cat is out of the bag for the entire planet Earth, and I'm down with that," the Pulp Fiction director continued.

"I am not an American filmmaker. I make movies for planet Earth and Cannes is the place that represents that." He added.

Brad Pitt stars in the film. The Pittster is also in Cannes to attend the premiere for the flick, which is 'in competition' at this year's fest.
slumdog-millionaire.jpgThe BBC are reporting that it has been a record-breaking year for UK film takings.

Oscar-winning drama Slumdog Millionaire and Mamma Mia! helped UK films generate more than $4bn (£2.58bn) in box office takings worldwide in 2008.

Last year saw the highest takings since records began in 2002, the UK Film Council said.

It said the UK accounted for 15% of the global market, up from 12% in 2007.

Other top-performing UK movies included Quantum of Solace, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, Atonement and The Other Boleyn Girl.

The success of Batman film The Dark Knight also helped boost UK takings.

Basterds screens: Critics respond

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
inglorious_basterds.jpgQuentin Tarantino's new film INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS has screened to critics over in Cannes, and here's some early feedback. It's mostly positive!

From Empire Magazine: Every bit as idiosyncratic as the spelling of its title, it's a wonderfully-acted movie that subverts expectation at every turn. And it may represent the most confident, audacious writing and directing of Qt's career.Forget what you think you know is such a cliché, but here it more than applies. Tarantino has made a career out of subverting expectations - this is the man who made a heist flick without a heist, after all - but he's outdone himself with Basterds. It's an action movie that has barely any action.

Total Film: "Not only did I love every minute, if the French projectionist wanted to cue it up and roll it again from the start, I would have sat through the whole film again, with the biggest grin on my face. This is Quentin's best film since Jackie Brown. It might even be his best film since Pulp Fiction." "[Eli Roth is] the only weak link I could spot" ... "Tarantino dialogue at its best" ... "QT's magpie eye has never been sharper, swooping down on Italian cinema and plucking the very best shots, framing and music to create a deserving homage to the spaghetti westerns of my youth."

FirstShowing: Inglourious Basterds was frickin' awesome! This is the WW2 movie we've all been waiting to see!! Lots of talking scenes, but still great! Diff than I was expecting, but I think Tarantino is back in action, hell yea!! The action is kind of minimal, but that's Tarantino for you, lots of talking, but great story, I loved it!

And via twitter:

BBCEntsTeam: Surely Tarantino's best film since Pulp Fiction.  Goody!! Brad Pitt is superb... It's flabby in parts...

channel4film Our Inglourious Basterds review up soon, but here's a taster: "A supremely enjoyable and invigorating experience"

And, take heed:

richardtanne RT: @PAULLLEWELLYN: Do not watch/read Kirk Honeycutt's review of INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS. He spoils the ending. -- WHAT AN ASSHOLE!

Leonardo wants to play Sinatra

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
leonardo-dicap.jpgIt seems that Leonardo DiCaprio is the latest in a long line of actors eager to land the role of Frank Sinatra in the upcoming Universal Pictures movie SINATRA, to be directed by Martin Scorsese.

A source tells British newspaper The Sun:

"Leo has hired a top vocal coach to get him sounding like Sinatra. He is a massive fan of the singer and has always wanted to play him. He would be sick to miss out on the leading role because his singing wasn't up to scratch. He is now in intensive vocal coaching lessons to replicate Sinatra's distinctive style."

Jamie Foxx (yes that one) is also said to be up the same part in the film.

Hurley quits film

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Liz-Hurley-n02.jpgBEDAZZLED actress Elizabeth Hurley has confirmed that she has quit films to concentrate on raising her six-year-old son Damien.

Speaking to Hello Magazine, Hurley said:

"I decided I couldn't do movies for a while, which was a huge decision for me because I actually love making movies more than anything."

And Hurley admits if she is offered a film role in the future which can be slotted around Damien's school holidays, she would "take it like a shot".

Hurley hasn't made a film since 2004. She has instead focused on her modelling career and other projects including her line of beachwear and a new organic food brand.

V - The New Series teaser trailer

Hands up who remembers the classic lizard TV-fest from the 1980's? You know the one - V. Michael Ironside, Freddy Kruger. Yes? Well, ABC have remade it for modern audiences, and it's coming to screens later in the year. The first teaser for the show has just hit the net. They come in peace... but not for long!!!

ghostbusters-3.jpgIt seems that GHOSTBUSTERS 3 could start shooting by the end of the year. The Los Angeles Times reports the exciting news! Yowser! Dan Aykroyd spoke to the paper yesterday.

Aykroyd said Sigourney Weaver is on board now, as are the original squad of ectoplasmic specialists -- Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson.

"We could be in production by winter."

Aykroyd said he wishes Ivan Reitman would return to direct the third film in the series but that he's "too busy as a mega-producer" to take it on; his second choice is Ramis, who, of course, co-wrote the first two "Ghostbusters" films with Aykroyd and has numerous directing credits, most notably "Groundhog Day" and "Analyze This."

The details of story are still in play, but Aykroyd said he's hoping for a five-member "new generation" team with several female members. "I'd like it to be a passing-of-the-torch movie. Let's revisit the old characters briefly and happily and have them there as family but let's pass it on to a new generation."

Classic Hottie: Rachel Ward

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
rw1.jpgToday's classic movie hottie is Rachel Ward from the 1984 movie AGAINST ALL ODDS - you know the film that boasted that classic eighties ballad by Phil Collins (...take a look at me now).

She was a beautiful fugitive. Fleeing from corruption. From power. He was a professional athlete past his prime. Hired to find her, he grew to love her. Love turned to obsession. Obsession turned to murder. And now the price of freedom might be nothing less than their lives.

It's the return of the Hot Click of the Day. Every day we will post a link to a clip that we deserves the inclusion on our little site. First up is the lovely Jennifer Love Hewitt in a scene from the rather underrated flick HEARTBREAKERS, which also starred the equally hot Sigourney Weaver. Yes. We love her too.

falling-down-again.jpgColin Jacobson reviews the Michael Douglas bad-ass fest FALLING DOWN:

While best known for "style over substance" flicks like The Lost Boys and Batman and Robin, director Joel Schumacher occasionally attempts something a little darker and more serious. In that vein, he created 1993's Falling Down, a tale of urban anxiety.

Bill Foster (Michael Douglas) leads a quiet life, but he grows increasingly fed up with the little bits of indignation he seems to endure on a daily basis. When he feels pushed too far, he finally snaps. Stuck in one of LA's patented never-ending traffic jams, Foster abandons his car on the freeway and declares he's going home.

"I just did a cameo a few months ago with Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen in a Judd Apatow produced film... It's called Funny People... I kinda do a little cameo in that... which was fun by the way. And 8 Mile was not a fun movie to shoot... [But] will I end up doing another movie again?... Probably yeah."

786936790504.jpgThe man Colin Jacobson slots in A BUG'S LIFE into his Blu-ray and comes up with a review..

We live in such a cruel, harsh competitive world. Our society always has to divide issues into "either/or." Whenever two movies come out that have similar themes, discussions never deal with what people thought of one or the other; it's always "which one's better" and the arguments that ensue. Bicker bicker bicker - why can't we all just get along?

Following a daring escape from an SUV that has been dropped out of an plane at the Burning Man Festival, he is coerced by the CIA into breaking a deep-cover agent named Xi Shing Lung out of a maximum security jail. George Clooney will star in and co-produce (with Smoke House partner Grant Heslov) the film A VERY PRIVATE GENTLEMAN. Their paths cross again 5000 years later when the warrior has been reincarnated as a demon hunter. The film is set for release in 2011.

That's it for today. More tomorrow folks!
The very first poster for THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON has been unleashed to web audiences (if that makes sense).

Here's the plot as listed on the IMDB:

After Bella recovers from the vampire attack that almost claimed her life, she looks to celebrate her birthday with Edward and his family. However, a minor accident during the festivities results in Bella's blood being shed, a sight that proves too intense for the Cullens, who decide to leave the town of Forks, Washington for Bella and Edward's sake. Initially heartbroken, Bella finds a form of comfort in reckless living, as well as an even-closer friendship with Jacob Black. Danger in different forms awaits.

... and here's the poster. Flick opens this November 20th.

jamie-foxx-sinatra.jpgThe big rumour is that Jamie Foxx is set to play Frank Sinatra in Martin Scorsese's SINATRA biopic, which is in the offing over at Universal Pictures. Surely not. Right?

Studio bosses are convinced Foxx has the charisma and talent to tackle the role of Sinatra, who died in 1998.

An insider tells Britain's Daily Star, "Jamie would seem to be born to the role. Magnificent voice, convincing acting ability - like Frank himself - born the wrong side of the tracks, makes it big against all odds, has his brush with authority. The guy's a gift."
More.
mischa_barton_nude_movie.jpgShe used to be in THE O.C. Now, Mischa Barton is going nudie (see what I did there). The stunning actress appears in new flick ASSASSINATION OF A HIGH SCHOOL PRESIDENT in the buff. Nude. Topless. And the folks at Egotastic have a video of said footage from the film (it aired over on Russian TV recently apparently).

Anybody remember back to about 15 years ago when film buffs regarded John Woo as pretty much the coolest director in the world? Via his Hong Kong operas of violence, Woo became incredibly hip back in the early Nineties.

colin.pngA movie that cost just £45 is wowing the Cannes Film Festival, and looks like it maye be picked up for distribution. COLIN: THE MOVIE is a zombie flick, and is made by Swansea born lad Marc Price. Read on - this from The Times.

"It cost us about £45, which was spent on a crowbar and some tapes," Price said.

"We wanted to focus on story and character, and rely on that to hook the audience."

The film puts an unusual slant on the zombie genre, telling the story from the point of view of a zombie trying to understand what has happened to him, rather than a human trying to escape and survive.

"The ultimate goal was rather than going for screams, we wanted to try to move the audience, to try to get them to cry, get a real emotional response from them," Price said.

Awesome Into The Blue 2 screen grabs

itb2.jpgYou have got to love the blokes at Joblo.com. Not only do they create a movie site dedicated to movie babes in the form of Movie Hotties, but they also regularly update with pics like these. Take a look over here at a bunch of screen grabs from INTO THE BLUE 2, a sequel to the underwater skin flick that starred Jessica Alba. Unfortunately, this film doesn't feature the recent Mummy, but we do get Laura Vandervoort.
Check out this very interesting, and slightly scary poster for director David Ellis's new chiller HUMPTY DUMPTY.

Last month, Ellis, producers producers Mark Ordesky and Fabienne Villette and writer Billy Majestic announced development on the project was going to begin for Amber Entertainment, iDream Company, Instinctive Film and Intandem Films. The story tells of a female alien who is raped by a group of rednecks. The offspring of this violation subsequently sets out and wreaks havoc.
Sounds charming. More over at MySpace.

Has this guy been cast as Thor?

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
chris-hemsworth.jpgDeadline Hollywood are reporting that Kenneth Branagh has found the actor to play THOR in his upcoming movie adaptation of the popular comic book series. That person is Chris Hemsworth, who actually got his break via the Aussie soap Home and Away.

Hemsworth, who appeared in JJ Abrams STAR TREK movie, is also up for a part in the planned remake of RED DAWN, playing the character of Jed Eckhart, a role made famous by Patrick Swayze in the original.

Talk about spot-on casting. I've just learned that Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige and director Kenneth Branagh have chosen their THOR -- and it's Chris Hemsworth, who can currently be seen as "George Kirk" in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot and also just snagged the lead in Red Dawn for United Artists on Thursday. (He's currently filming Joss Whedon's horror flick Cabin In The Woods for UA, and I heard the studio was so hot on him that it cast Hemsworth in the action pic.)

dr-who-xmas.jpgDavid Tennant and Billie Piper have been reunited on the set of the DR WHO Christmas special, according to the News of the World:

They laughed and joked as they filmed the Christmas Special - after a year enjoying their own space.

Billie, 26, took a break from playing side-kick Rose to become a mum to Winston, now seven months old. And she filmed the third series of Secret Diary Of A Call Girl.

An onlooker at the south London set said: "Billie and David were joking about and seemed delighted to be working with one another again.

Personally, I cannot wait for this. Check out 60+ year old Sly's Photoshopped torso!
et.jpgI read in this month's Empire magazine that Steven Spielberg would not even consider making a sequel to his classic 1982 movie E.T. but it seems that the National Enquirer has a better source. Celebutopia reports:

According the National Enquirer, Barrymore and Spielberg have met to discuss the project, which will show E.T. returning to Earth to rejoin the now-adult Gertie.

A source told the tabloid, "Steven and Drew are being very secretive about this baby. But they want to do this project and work together. Steven has an incredible story in mind for the sequel that will bring E.T. back to earth."

toystory3big.jpgThe mighty UGO are reporting that we are going to be treated to a trailer for TOY STORY 3 very, very soon. In fact, the promo is going to be attached to Pixar's next UP,which debuted yesterday at the Cannes Film Festival.

I just got off the phone with John Ratzenberger and he told me that not only has he already been recording his lines for Toy Story 3, but that PIXAR is going to be debuting the trailer for it before UP! This isn't surprising news, but I haven't seen it or heard it from anyone, until now.

He said that it is very funny and it felt great to "put the cork back in" for Hamm the Piggy Bank. You were already going to see UP anyhow, which is fantastic film, but now you have even more of an incentive to go!
UP opens on June 18th.

Is Anybody There? is an intimate little character study about a young boy (played by Bill Milner of Son of Rambow fame) growing up in an old folks home during the mid 80's. He strikes up a most unusual friendship with a crotchety old codger (played by the truly gifted Michael Caine) whose starting to show signs of dementia. Together, this seemingly odd couple become the best of friends.

nine.pngThe trailer for Rob Marshall's latest musical movie NINE has hit the inter-webs over at the delicious Apple website.

Daniel Day-Lewis, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Kate Hudson and tons of other high profile peeps star in the film, which is released in cinemas on November 25th (Stateside).
50cent_01.jpgKeanu Reeves may be up for playing Jekyll and Hyde in a new movie called JEKYLL, based on the Robert Louis Stevenson story The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for Universal, but he ain't the only one. In a totally different project, THE BAD LIEUTENANT helmer Abel Ferarra is lining up Forest Whittaker and Curtin '50 Cent' Jackson for JEKYLL AND HYDE.

Both are attached to play the lead roles in the classic tale about a doctor who invents a potion that unleashes his violent alter ego.

The project starts filming in late summer, according to Variety.

minotaur.jpgJohn Stevenson, he who is most famous for co-directing KUNG FU PANDA, has signed up to direct the weirdly titled THE MINOTAUR TAKES A CIGARETTE BREAK.

Mike Jones has written the adaptation of Steven Sherrill's 2000 novel about the mythological creature -- half-man, half-bull -- who survived Theseus' attack in the labyrinth and walks among us today. He's a short-order cook in a Midwestern diner not far from his trailer-park home who falls for an epileptic waitress named Kelly.

"Minotaur" is conceived as a live-action love story with CGI elements.

The Gotham Group are behind the film.
tigershark.gifHIGHLANDER director Russell Mulcahy has signed on to direct the 3-D shark movie BAIT.

The Hollywood Reporter says the project, set to begin filming on Australia's Gold Coast this year, will be co-produced by Arclight Films and Australia's Limelight.

The film is set in a coastal town where a freak tsunami floods and traps shoppers in a supermarket with an armed maniac and a pack of hungry tiger sharks that have been washed into the building.

Can't wait to see what he does with this. Doesn't it sound, quite simply, AWESOME! Talkback folks!

Word is that Stallone, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger will appear in a scene together. I am wet with anticipation. The official blog is here.

Scorsese directing Sinatra

frank sinatra.jpgUniversal Pictures and Mandalay Pictures have signed up veteran helmer Martin Scorsese to direct a biopic of legendary crooner Frank Sinatra. SINATRA will be written by FIELDS OF DREAMS scribe Phil Alden Robinson.

"We have dreamt of making a movie about Frank Sinatra, and Marty Scorsese is undeniably the perfect vision keeper for this project," said Chairman of Mandalay Entertainment Group, Peter Guber. President of Mandalay Pictures, Cathy Schulman added "In addition to our excitement at having Marty in the director's chair, we are thrilled to be in business with Universal, the Sinatra estate, Warner Music Group and the talented Phil Alden Robinson on this project about one of our greatest entertainers."

The full press release is posted after the jump folks
cliffhanger.jpgI don't know if I like this or not. Renny Harlin's CLIFFHANGER was actually one of Stallone's better movies, but here comes the news that FAST AND FURIOUS and xXx uber-producer Neil H. Moritz is planning a reboot of the mountain set actioner.

Variety says the new version will center on a group of young climbers. "Just as they rebooted 'Star Trek,' we're going to do the same with 'Cliffhanger,'" said Moritz, who will produce. Unlike the original, where Italy stood in for the Colorado Rockies, the new redo looks set to feature multiple cliff-face locations.

Moritz (Fast & Furious) and StudioCanal are looking to attach a screenwriter for a 2010 shoot.

What do you guys think? By the way - have you played the CLIFFHANGER drinking game?

Review: Observe and Report

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
rogen.jpgApologies for the lateness in filing this, but here it is anyway - Adam Mast reviews the Seth Rogen comedy OBSERVE AND REPORT.

Observe and Report is one of the most polarizing films of the year. But then, comedy has always been one of the most polarizing of genres. Part of the problem with this latest effort from Foot Fist Way director Jody Hill, is that too much of the time, it isn't particularly funny.

In Observe and Report, the portly Seth Rogen plays Ronnie Barnhardt, a bi-polar mall cop who can't handle not being the center of attention. When a mysterious flasher starts wreaking havoc amongst the mall's patrons, Barnhardt springs into action. In the process, he tries to win the affection of a snobby department store employee (played by Anna Faris) who hardly even knows he exists. Complications arise when the head of the mall calls in the city police department. Naturally, Barnhardt doesn't take kindly to this news. The mall is his domain and when he's forced to share the limelight with an actual police officer (played by Ray Liotta), it isn't long before contention sets in.

Megan Fox is bisexual... apparently

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
meganfox.jpgMegan Fox. Yes TRANSFORMERS Megan Fox has told Esquire magazine that she is bisexual. In fact, we're all bisexual... Here, read this...

The Transformers actress says she's a bisexual woman who won't sleep with other bisexual women. She told Esquire: "I think people are born bisexual and they make subconscious choices based on the pressures of society. "I have no question in my mind about being bisexual. But I'm also a hypocrite. I would never date a girl who was bisexual, because that means they also sleep with men, and men are so dirty that I'd never want to sleep with a girl who had slept with a man."
quentin_tarantino.jpgThat crazy film geek just can't stop working. I am talking of Quentin Tarantino, who has apparently half-finished writing the prequel to the upcoming INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, months before the movie comes out. He spoke to the New York Times.

Mr. Tarantino, who was born in Tennessee, said his childhood revenge fantasies centered more on the Ku Klux Klan. "But it's all the same," he said. "Once the Basterds get through with Europe, they could go to the South and do it to the Kluxers in the '50s. That's another story you could tell."

Not to mention a shelved subplot about African-American soldiers stuck behind enemy lines. "I have a half-written prequel ready to go if this movie's a smash," he said.
Picture 3.pngI am yet to be aroused by the upcoming McG film TERMINATOR SALVATION, but this is perhaps getting me in the mood for foreplay.. a four minute HD, Internet only extended trailer. I'm not one for all this post-apocalyptic madness, but maybe this film will come up trumps later in the month when it finally hits screens.

I give you Connor. John Connor. Come This way if you want to live.
300.jpeg300 is getting the very special edition treatment on Blu-ray disk later this year.

DVD Review: Mall Cop (2009)

mall-cop.jpg

Reviewed by: Colin Jacobson, DVDMG.com

Most of the time, January movie releases offer the equivalent of "shovelware". They're leftovers not deemed good enough for a more active time of the year thrown out simply to fill theaters with something until screens heat up later in the year. For years, the most successful January release was the re-release of Star Wars. When the month can't even boast an original offering as its biggest title, you know it's a dismal time of the year.

That changed in 2009 with the release of Paul Blart: Mall Cop. A veritable Little Movie That Could, Cop looked like the usual sacrificial lamb that would quickly come and go. However, it came and stayed - to the tune of a final box office gross of $145 million.

It seems like years ago I first heard about this love letter to the Star Wars saga. Perhaps that's because it was years ago. Fanboys has been sitting on a shelf for I don't know how long, but now, it's finally seeing the light of day.

In Fanboys, a pack of rabid Star Wars fans (and childhood friends) take a road trip to the Skywalker Ranch when they learn that one of their own is dying of cancer. Their mission? To steal a copy of Phantom Menace before it's scheduled release date, and set up a private screening as a treat for their dying frined.

Review: The Soloist

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

By Adam Mast

soloisy.jpg

The Soloist is the true story of Steve Lopez, a self centered journalist whose world would open up after befriending Nathaniel Ayers, a schizophrenic street musician with unbelievable talent.

The Soloist is an odd little film. The trailer suggests that this picture might be in the same vein as Mr. Holland's Opus with it's inspirational tale of a man rising up against all odds through the power of music. Actually, The Soloist is more bittersweet than sweet which would be fine if the film weren't so darned meandering. When the movie was over, I found myself strangely unaffected by it. This, despite Robert Downey Jr.'s strongest effort at trying to convince me I was watching something important. To Downey Jr.'s great credit, he tries awfully hard here, and quite often he is able to elevate the material. Jamie Foxx by contrast didn't quite get there for me which is strange given he had the showier role. I applaud Foxx for taking a low key approach, but the fact remains, I never really bought into him as this character.

Director Joe Wright (Atonement) does some interesting things with the camera here. His theatrical nature serves him well. There are cool birds eye aerial view shots that perfectly capture the sights and sounds of Los Angeles, and I really loved a scene in which Wright literally puts you inside Nathaniel's head so we the audience can see and feel first hand what music means to this man.

Unfortunately though, The Soloist suffers from not knowing what it really wants to be. Is it a story about friendship? Is it as tale of compassion? Is it a social commentary piece on the homeless issue here in the states? Is it about the importance and power of music? Some would argue that The Soloist is about all of the above, but from my standpoint, the film's lack of focus hinders its overall impact.

Lick Me! Megan Fox

meganlicks.jpgHere's the lovely TRANSFORMERS star Megan Fox walking, quite innocently, down the streets of Los Angeles -- with her tongue popping out of her mouth. We are not quite sure why this is so news worthy -- it just is okay!!! This was found at the super site Celebtopia. The darlings.

The Blu-ray Review: Batman (1989)

1989's Batman came out while I attended college. Actually, it arrived over summer break, so when we went back to school in the fall, I asked my friends' opinions of it. I really loved it and had become quite enamored of all things Bat-related during those few months, so I was curious to know what others thought.

One friend, who we'll call "Mike" - since that's his name - absolutely hated it. His statement, and I quote, was that Batman was "like a nightmare" because of its unrelenting darkness.

Another friend, who we'll call "Biff" - although his real name's Hyun - also disliked Batman, but for alternate reasons. He knew little about Bat- history and had mainly gained exposure to the series through Frank Miller's amazing mid-1980s graphic novel series The Dark Knight Returns. Since that series featured a really brutal Batman, Biff thought the 1989 movie version seemed way too mild. A nightmare? Not nightmarish enough, according to him!

Review: X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Adam Mast has chimed in with his take on X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE.

x-men-origins-wolverine-2.jpgThere's been a lot made of Wolverine in the press as of late. This X-Men origin story made major headlines after the film was leaked on line in its entirety a couple months back. Since its auspicious and unexpected internet debut reviews have been popping up online, and the reaction has been mixed at best. According to 20th Century Fox though, folks shouldn't be so quick to judge this early version film. The studio claims there have been re-shoots (which, generally speaking, isn't necessarily a good thing) and that the effects have been greatly improved. Having seen the final version, I can honestly say I don't think Wolverine is bad or good. It's somewhere in between. In fact, I'd probably rank it alongside the third X-Men film.

As previously stated, Wolverine is an origin story. A tale of how Hugh Jackman's James Logan would become the fierce warrior we've all come to know and love. As the film opens, we're introduced to young James Logan. Logan is a mutant, therefore life is a struggle for the pre-teen as he possesses powers he doesn't quite understand. After an unfortunate mishap, Logan flees his home with brother Victor Creed, and together they eventually join an elite covert squad comprised of other mutants. This squad is the brainchild of military man William Stryker. Stryker promises the best for Logan and the other men, but before long, it appears that he might just have a hidden agenda.

Wolverine was directed by the gifted Gavin Hood who, just four years ago, made the brilliant Johannesburg crime thriller Tsotsi. Here, Hood ditches gritty drama and character driven moral dilemmas and trades them in for things that go boom, and over-bloated super hero antics. The end result is a film that moves at a quick clip, but is ultimately too stuffed for its own good.

As was the case with X-Men 3, the inclusion of numerous iconic characters isn't always a good thing. Just because they're there doesn't make them worth watching. In Wolverine, we get fan favorites like Gambit (played by the charismatic Kitsch) and Wade Wilson (played by a likable Ryan Reynolds), but these famed comic book figures aren't really developed enough as characters worth caring about. Hugh Jackman brings a familiar and much welcome swagger to Wolverine, while Liev Schreiber lends a bit of snarly attitude to Creed (a character who would go on to become Sabertooth). Beyond that though, various characters and the actors who play them just sort of float in and out of this chaotic mess like after thoughts. This includes Lord of the Rings' Dominic Monaghan, who shows up for all but five minutes as Bolt.

Having said that, Wolverine does move at a zippy pace. I wouldn't say I was ever bored by it. Hood keeps things moving relatively quickly and he even has the good sense to throw in a couple of guest appearances. Guest appearances that I'm not about to give away in this review. In the end though, with comic book properties inspiring unforgettable adaptations like The Dark Knight and Iron Man, film makers really have to bring their A game when it comes to super hero movies. Wolverine is more of a C+ game.

Grade: C+
